Scotland ([ˈskɔtlənd], Scottish Gaelic Alba [ˈal̪ˠapə], Latin Caledonia) is a largely autonomous part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Scotland consists of the northern third of the largest European island Great Britain and several archipelagos and has around 5.5 million inhabitants. The Scottish capital has been Edinburgh since 1437 (previously Perth).
